What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that reshapes the breasts and raises the nipples to correct drooping and sagging. Many factors can cause the breasts to droop, sag, and elongate. These include pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain or loss, and aging. Gravity is not a friend, and, unfortunately, diet and exercise can’t correct the issue once sagging has occurred.

Your Customized Breast Lift

The extent of breast lift surgery is largely dictated by the amount of drooping. In mild cases, incisions can be limited to around the nipple, however, in most cases, excess skin from the bottom part of the breast needs to be removed as well. Many times, the breast has also become deflated with a loss of volume. This can be treated with implants, or a breast augmentation, at the same time as your breast lift. A breast lift might also be performed after breast reduction surgery to reduce the size of the breasts. During your consultation, Dr. Roham will exam your breasts to help guide you in finding the procedure that can best help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Mastopexy Procedure

A breast lift is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure where you can return home later the same day. The type of mastopexy required depends on the extent of drooping of your breasts. The lift may simply involve removal of skin around the areola. For slightly more severe cases, an incision vertically from the lower border of the areola to the crease under the breast is added. For the most significant cases, the incision must be extended along the crease under the breast. As stated before, many times the final outcome may be improved drastically by the addition of an implant. The purpose of all the different procedures is to reshape the breast, raise the nipple to an appropriate location, tighten the skin, and restore a perky appearance. Dr. Roham has expertise in all of the various techniques to resuspend, reshape, and rejuvenate your breasts to restore their youthful appearance. In all cases, absorbable sutures are used to close the incisions, so there are no stitches to remove. Dr. Roham uses specialized techniques to limit swelling and discomfort, conceal scarring, and give you a quicker and smoother recovery.

Recovery After Breast Lift

The recovery from a breast lift requires rest and limited activity for a short period so that healing can occur. The discomfort after breast lift surgery is usually mild and well controlled with the medications prescribed by Dr. Roham. After surgery, you will have a light dressing placed to limit swelling. After this is removed, you will be asked to wear a supportive bra for approximately one month. As with all surgery at Advance Laser and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, you will be given detailed before and after surgery instructions, and Dr. Roham will be available to answer questions and guide you along the way.

Am I a good candidate for a breast lift?

Women who have saggy breasts or ptosis are excellent candidates.

Does a breast lift affect breast size?

No. A breast lift reshapes the tissue, lift the breasts higher, and remove excess skin.

How long will my procedure take?

The procedure takes two to three hours.

How long will I have to wait before seeing my results?

Youā€™ll see an immediate lift of the breasts after the procedure. The bruising and swelling obscures the results for a few days. The complete results will appear one to two months after your treatment. The scars will continue to fade for the first year after your breast lift.
