Hand Veins
Conveniently located to serve the areas of Santa Ana, San Clemente and Orange County, CA

Hand rejuvenation is a collection of treatments that restore a more youthful and vibrant appearance to your hands by addressing prominent veins.
Over time, it is common for your veins to become more visible in your hands, especially due to the natural effects of aging. These veins can start to bulge, especially as the natural fat in your hands depletes, and your skin starts to thin. (1) While prominent veins are harmless, they can cause your hands to take on an aged or diminished appearance.
At Advance Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Tim Roham can perform hand vein rejuvenation to restore vitality. Dr. Roham is an accomplished cosmetic surgeon with more than three decades of experience, and he is a Diplomat of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Through this unique training, he has helped thousands of patients nationwide restore their skin through his range of vein treatments.

About Hand Vein Rejuvenation
Hand vein rejuvenation includes several treatments that each can reduce the appearance of prominent, bulging, and unsightly veins. These treatments range from injectables to minimally invasive surgical procedures, but each can restore a smoother, clearer, and more refreshed look to your hands. At Advance Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Roham can perform several treatments to help you address your venous concerns, including sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, a fat transfer, and administering dermal fillers.
- Sclerotherapy: Sclerotherapy is a procedure that uses an irritating substance called a sclerosant to cause controlled damage to the cellular lining of your veins, destroying the vein itself from the inside out. Many medical professionals consider sclerotherapy to be the gold standard for treating superficial veins, varicose veins, reticular veins, and spider veins. (2)
- Phlebectomy: Phlebectomy is a procedure that uses a small hook to extract the veins from your hands. (3)
- Fat Transfer: A fat transfer is a procedure that uses liposuction techniques to remove fat from one area of the body and transfer it to another to enhance and resculpt its appearance. Dr. Roham can take fat from most areas of the body and reinject it into your hands to restore your subcutaneous fat and diminish the look of your prominent veins.
- Dermal Fillers: Dermal fillers are gel-like injectable treatments that can restore natural-looking volume to various features and regions of the body. Dr. Roham specifically offers hyaluronic acid-based fillers, including Juvéderm® and Restylane®.

Preparation
After scheduling your hand vein rejuvenation treatment, you will need to start making certain preparations. To help, Dr. Roham will give you a set of preparation instructions. These instructions will vary depending on the exact treatment he performs, but you must follow each closely. Dr. Roham may instruct you to:
- Discontinue using blood-thinning medications and supplements.
- Refrain from any nicotine or alcohol consumption in the weeks leading up to your treatment.
- Avoid tanning and limit your sun exposure in the days before your treatment.
- Refrain from using certain skin products on your hands, such as lotions or body oils.
Procedure
On the day of your procedure, you should arrive at your appointment with clean skin that is free from any skin care products or makeup. A member of our team will meet with you and lead you to a private treatment room where you will meet with Dr. Roham. He will reconfirm your desired corrections with you before administering a local anesthetic. From there, he will either perform sclerotherapy, a phlebectomy, a fat transfer, or administer dermal fillers.
Sclerotherapy
Dr. Roham will administer the sclerosant into your hand veins. He will first inject the larger veins in your hand to allow the solution to naturally flow into your smaller veins, treating them in the process. Dr. Roham will address each vein within a singular appointment to ensure that none of the veins reopen. He will also use only the smallest amount of sclerosant necessary to avoid the risk of creating new visible veins or irritating your tissues.
He will then wrap your hands in a compressive dressing and ask you to remain seated for several minutes before allowing you to leave. (2)
Phlebectomy
Your phlebectomy will begin with Dr. Roham placing several tiny incisions around your hands. He will then use a surgical hook to carefully remove a small section of each targeted vein. After removing each section, the remainder of the vein will collapse within the body. After Dr. Roham addresses the entire treatment area, he will carefully clean your skin before closing the incisions.
Fat Transfer
Dr. Roham begins each fat transfer procedure by using liposuction to harvest excess fat from other areas of the body. Many patients choose areas such as their abdomen, thighs, or buttocks, but he may take fat from anywhere your body possesses an adequate amount. Dr. Roham will inject your local fat with a tumescent solution to swell the fat cells, making them easier to remove. He will then use a small cannula to break down and aspirate the fat from the area, leaving it more slender and toned. (4)
Dr. Roham will process and purify your fat before reinjecting it into your hands. He will carefully layer the fat to restore a plumper, more youthful-looking appearance while softening the appearance of your veins. After he has attained your desired appearance, he will allow you to rest under the care of his team before he allows you to leave.
Dermal Fillers
When administering dermal fillers, Dr. Roham will use a skin-safe marker to carefully mark out each injection site. He will then administer the hyaluronic acid fillers to the back of your hands to create natural-looking and feeling volume while reducing the appearance of your veins. He will repeat this process until he achieves your desired results. He will then gently massage the treatment area to ensure the formula feels evenly distributed and smooth before he allows you to leave.
Recovery
Your recovery will vary depending on the type of treatment Dr. Roham performs, the extent of your corrections, and the rate at which your body heals itself. Generally, you may return to light activities and desk work shortly after your appointment. However, you will need to refrain from engaging in any strenuous or physically demanding activities for at least 24 to 48 hours.
As your skin heals, you may experience some redness or swelling around your hands. These effects are temporary and will subside on their own shortly after. During this time, you will need to wear a specialized compression garment. This garment will minimize swelling and maintain the contours of your hands throughout your recovery.
Results
The results of our hand vein rejuvenation treatments are gradual, which means you will be able to see the results develop over time. How quickly your veins fade will vary depending on the exact treatment you receive, but you can expect your smaller veins to begin disappearing within three to six weeks, with your larger veins fading over the course of three to four months.
After your veins fade, you will be able to enjoy the appearance of clearer, brighter skin. Any prominent or bulging veins will be reduced, restoring a more evenly toned appearance across your hands, as well as a smoother and softer feel. You may also enjoy improvements in volume if you received either dermal fillers or a fat transfer procedure.
The results of hand vein rejuvenation are permanent, which means you will be able to enjoy your renewed appearance for years to come.
