About
Breast augmentation, sometimes referred to as breast enhancement or breast enlargement, is a surgical procedure in which breast implants are used to improve the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. It is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures, and the satisfaction rate is very high. Women of all ages choose to have breast augmentation for many reasons, including underdeveloped, uneven, or sagging breasts. You can make many changes to your body by making healthy choices, but if you are dissatisfied with the size of your breasts, surgery may be your only option. Many women want to increase the volume of their breasts to look and feel better, and most are ecstatic about their improved appearance and boosted self-esteem after augmentation.
Every year, thousands of women choose to have this surgery performed for various reasons and are extremely satisfied with their results.
Customization
There are several considerations and options Dr. Roham will discuss with you prior to performing your breast augmentation:
- Implant type (saline vs silicone)
- Implant shape (round vs anatomically shaped)
- Incision location (under the breast, around the areola, or under the arm)
- Implant location (under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle)
Dr. Roham will discuss each of these options in full detail with you during your consultation, so you have the information necessary to make an educated decision for optimal results. Some women may also wish to have a breast lift at the same time to further improve the appearance of the breasts. Your anatomy will help dictate the best strategy for achieving the breast size and shape you desire. During your consultation, Dr. Roham will use his expertise to guide your decision.

Procedure Options
Size
Obviously, size is an important factor. Implant size refers to volume. It is not measured by bra cup size (A, B, C, D, etc.) The size of breast implants is measured in cubic centimeters (CCs), and determines the volume of the implant. The higher the volume, the bigger the implant. CCs are the metric unit of volume used to describe breast implant capacity. Both saline and silicone implants are measured in CCs and typically range from 120cc to 800cc.
Shape
A breast implant can be either round or anatomical (teardrop). Round implants are circular in shape and create a fuller breast with more cleavage. Teardrop or anatomical implants have a slight slope to them and are designed to mimic the shape of a “natural” breast. The type of implant, whether saline or silicone, will be decided during your consultation. Additionally, an implant can be placed above or below the muscle.
Types – Silicone & Saline
We offer two options for Breast Augmentation – silicone and saline implants. Each has its merits, so the decision will ultimately come down to personal preference. Saline implants are inserted into the breast pocket empty and, once placed, are filled with a sterile saline solution. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a cohesive gel that holds itself together as a semisolid mass. Silicone implants produce a more natural look as they more closely mimic the feel of a natural breast. Silicone implants are extremely durable.
Profiles
Implants come in different profiles that are based on the appearance of the implant from the side. High profile breast implants produce a rounder appearance and more outward projection; they work better for women who have loose or droopy skin or who desire more projection. Moderate profile breast implants create a more natural shape and appearance and are commonly used for women with tighter skin and smaller breasts and wish for a more subtle natural look.
Incision Location
The incisions can be hidden under the breast, around the areola, or under the arm. The Inframammary (under the breast) method gives surgeons easy access to create a pocket above or underneath the muscle, which means greater control. Scarring is minimally visible as it blends in with the breast’s natural fold. The Periareolar incision is made on the lower half of the areola at the junction between the breast skin and the pigmented areola. This incision is most commonly used if a patient is undergoing additional breast procedures such as a Breast Lift or areola reduction. The Transaxiallary breast augmentation method refers to the placement of the incision in the armpit. While it’s well hidden, please keep in mind that only saline breast implants can be used for the procedure. If the patient wishes to have silicone breast implants, a different incision option is necessary. Today’s implants are backed by decades of research and are the safest they have ever been. Many women are surprised to learn that some of the implant manufacturers provide a lifetime warranty on their implants.
Procedure
Dr. Roham uses a specialized technique with highly advanced instruments to place your implants precisely and give you the natural look you want. His gentle technique allows for minimal bruising, decreased discomfort, a fast recovery, and a beautiful result. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. A very tiny and well-hidden incision is placed in the crease under your breast, around your areola, or under your arm. Then Dr. Roham develops the space to place the implant either directly behind your breast tissue (subglandular) or behind your muscle (submuscular). He does this gently and meticulously to minimize any bruising and discomfort. Next, the implant is placed into the precise pocket. If you have selected a saline implant, this is placed and then filled to the desired volume. Silicone implants come pre-filled. Dr. Roham very carefully inspects the breasts to make sure there is excellent symmetry, shape, and size. The small incisions are then closed with sutures that dissolve completely and never need to be removed. A small dressing is then applied followed by placement of a surgical bra. The surgery is short, so you don’t have to stay under anesthesia or sedation for long. There are no wraps or drainage tubes to deal with after breast augmentation surgery with Dr. Roham. After your procedure, you are able to go home the same day.
Recovery
Dr. Roham’s specialized technique allows for a fast recovery with minimal downtime. Post-operative instructions call for rest and limited movement. Within a day or two, most women are off pain medications and back to their usual routine, with some minor limitations. You will be given a prescription for a medication to help with the initial discomfort. Additionally, Dr. Roham will ask that you massage the breasts frequently in the early weeks after breast augmentation surgery to prevent scar formation around the implant.
Ideal Candidates
The ideal candidate for breast augmentation is a woman who is dissatisfied with her current breast size and wants to improve the symmetry and fullness of her breasts to boost her confidence in her own appearance. If you are in good health, have realistic expectations, and do not smoke, you are likely a good candidate.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How soon can I exercise after breast augmentation?
While it is a good idea to introduce walking into your routine to increase your blood circulation as soon as you feel up for it, strenuous exercise should be postponed for a month or two. Rigorous exercise that jostles your breasts, such as cardio aerobic activity, can prolong your recovery.
Is it okay to have breast augmentation before having children or should I wait?
Breast implants rarely obstruct your ability to breastfeed safely, especially when the implant is placed behind the chest muscle, so there is no reason that you cannot have breast augmentation prior to becoming a mother. Your breasts gain volume during pregnancy and then decrease in size once breastfeeding is complete. Therefore, if you are imminently planning to have children, it may make sense to wait to see how your breasts look after pregnancy.
How natural will my breasts look and feel if I have breast augmentation?
When you think of breast implants, your first thought may be of round, oversized implants that make breasts artificial. While that is certainly achievable if that is your desired look, most of our breast augmentation patients prefer a more natural appearance. To keep your breasts looking authentic, you will probably want to choose an implant size that enhances your breast profile while still being proportional to your body size. Teardrop shaped implants mimic the shape of the youthful breasts more than round implants. Additionally, silicone implants have a texture that more closely resembles real breast tissue than saline implants.
How long do breast implants last?
When performed by a skilled breast specialist who uses high-quality implants, breast augmentation results last for 10 to 20 years. In the future, you will need breast revision surgery, where you can decide to remove and replace (or simply remove) your implants to achieve your preferred breast shape.
Can implants help to correct the droopiness of my breasts?
The focus of breast augmentation is to add volume to the breasts. Implants will not do anything to improve the elevation of your breasts. If you would like to augment and lift your breasts, you are likely a good candidate for combining breast augmentation and breast lift.
Will I have scars after breast augmentation?
Because incisions are necessary to insert breast implants, some scarring is inevitable. The good news is that Dr. Roham and Dr. Roham deliberately place their incisions along the natural folds of your breasts where scarring is easily concealed. Depending on your preferences and your cosmetic goals, breast augmentation incisions can be placed under the lower breast fold, around the perimeter of the areola, or within the armpit.
