What is Ear Surgery?
The otoplasty can be performed at any age and is often selected for children. Ears that “stick out” are often the source of teasing and ridicule, so correcting this prior to any devastating effect on the psyche is preferred. However, we often see adults who decide to have their ears corrected later in life.
Customization
Your ear surgery can be customized depending on your specific concerns. For ears that are protruding, an incision can be made in the back of the ear where cartilage can then be removed. Ear surgery can also be performed to address the earlobes, correcting sagging, overly large, or misshapen earlobes. No matter what your concerns are, incisions will be placed where they can be easily concealed.
Procedure
Ear surgery can be performed under general or local anesthesia depending upon the age of the patient and the concerns being addressed. You will be able to go home on the day of surgery. The standard otoplasty procedure performed by Dr. Roham brings the ears closer to the head. Otoplasty begins with an incision hidden in the crease behind the ear. This incision allows the cartilage located behind the ears to be reshaped, and, in some cases, partially removed to reposition the ears close to the scalp. Specialized sutures are used to create a lifelong result.
Recovery
After the surgery is completed, a special dressing will be wrapped around the head. This method secures the ear in place and assists with the healing process. The bandages are usually removed within a week and replaced with smaller dressings. Post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time. The discomfort after otoplasty is typically well controlled with the medication prescribed by Dr. Roham. You should keep your head elevated to decrease the swelling in the first few days. As with all surgery at Advance Laser and Cosmetic Surgery you will be given detailed before and after surgery instructions, and Dr. Roham will be available to answer questions and guide you along the way.
