What is Nose Surgery?

Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty or nose job, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can reshape and sculpt the nasal tissues to improve the size, projection, angle, and shape of the nose. Any number of nasal deformities can be addressed with rhinoplasty. These include a large nose, a crooked nose, a bulky or boxy tip, or a nose with a hump. Rhinoplasty continues to be one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States.

Customization

Rhinoplasty surgery is performed in one of two ways. There is the open approach where a small incision is placed at the base of the nose as well as inside the nose. This approach allows for more significant reshaping of the cartilage. The other option is the endonasal procedure, using incisions made entirely inside the nose to avoid visible scarring. Both techniques are available at Advance Laser and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery and your particular situation will help determine which is best for achieving your aesthetic goals.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and you will be able to return home the same day. During the rhinoplasty procedure, small incisions are made within the nose and sometimes across the base or columella. These incisions allow exposure of the underlying nasal support structures of cartilage and bone. Each portion of the bone and cartilage can be expertly manipulated by Dr. Roham to reshape the nose. Many times, a segment of the septal cartilage will be used to make grafts that help to further refine the nasal shape.

Recovery

Following rhinoplasty surgery, you should plan on a week of rest and time off work. During this week, you will have a splint placed on the outside of your nose. Dr. Roham, in almost all cases, is able to avoid placing nasal splints internally, as they can be very bothersome to patients.

The external splint will be removed one week after surgery. All sutures are absorbable so there will be no need for their removal. You should avoid wearing eyeglass during your recovery and opt for contacts instead.

The discomfort after rhinoplasty can be minimized with medication prescribed by Dr. Roham. Swelling after rhinoplasty can be significant in the first few days and linger for several months. You should keep your head elevated to decrease the swelling in the first few days.

Though much of the swelling will resolve within a month or two, it may take a full year to reach your final results. As with all surgery at Advance Laser and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery you will be given detailed before and after surgery instructions, and Dr. Roham will be available to answer questions and guide you along the way.

What Can I Do To Recover?

You may use a cold pack to alleviate redness and inflammation after the procedure. Limit sun exposure and use an SPF moisturizer. Don’t massage the nose because it can alter the shape of the filler.
