Before and After Photos

About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a procedure that is popular among individuals who seek relief from the physical discomfort and aesthetic concerns associated with large breasts. Some people may find that overly large breasts can affect their physical activities, posture, and even psychological well-being. Patients might also complain about not being able to wear the clothes they would like and finding exercise uncomfortable. Studies show that many women consider breast reduction not only for aesthetic reasons but also for the significant reduction in chronic pain and the enhancement of overall body image. (1,2)

Benefits

Breast reduction offers patients a wide variety of benefits, including improved comfort and enhanced confidence. At Advance Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, our personalized treatment plans help patients see benefits such as:

  • Improved comfort: Many patients experience significant relief from physical pain in the back, neck, and shoulders previously caused by overly large breasts.
  • Enhanced quality of life: Performing everyday activities may become easier, with patients reporting greater enjoyment in physical exercise and other activities.
  • Better posture: With reduced breast weight, patients often see an improvement in posture.
  • Relief from skin issues: Larger breasts can lead to rashes and skin irritation beneath the breasts, but reducing the size of the breasts can reduce skin irritation.
  • Customized aesthetic results: Surgeons design each procedure to fit the patient’s unique anatomical requirements, leading to more natural-looking outcomes.
  • Clothing fit improvement: Patients frequently find it easier to shop for and wear clothing that fits their new proportions.
  • Insurance coverage possibilities: Many insurance companies may cover breast reduction surgery if it is deemed medically necessary.

Preparation

Once your surgery date is confirmed, you will receive detailed preoperative instructions. These instructions may vary depending on your goals and medical history, but common preparation steps may include:

  • Stopping the use of blood thinners, supplements, and other medications as instructed
  • Ceasing nicotine use before and during recovery for optimal healing
  • Filling prescriptions for pain management medication before surgery
  • Arranging transportation and any necessary assistance at home post-procedure
  • Pre-arranging any necessary time away from work or social commitments for adequate recovery time

Procedure

The techniques used during your breast reduction will depend on the size of your breasts and your goals for results. Liposuction is often used when excess fat is causing overly large breasts. (1) Another technique is surgical tissue excision, usually required when a significant size decrease is desired. During breast reduction, Dr. Roham can also reposition the nipples, and some women opt for a breast lift as well to remove stretched skin and tissue and to further optimize their results. Dr. Roham will go over which techniques will be most effective for you at your personal consultation.

Dr. Roham will perform your breast reduction procedure after our anesthesiologist administers general anesthesia. The techniques Dr. Roham uses during the procedure will differ from patient to patient. The most common technique is called the “inverted T” incision or “anchor” incision. This method requires an incision around the areola, down to the breast crease, and under the breast. (2) Dr. Roham can then remove excess skin, fat, and tissue from the breasts. If necessary, he will lift the nipples to a natural and more youthful-looking position. Dr. Roham will close the incisions with sutures.

Recovery

Breast Reduction Advance Laser and Cosmetic Surgery

After your breast reduction procedure, you will need to prioritize getting plenty of rest. This involves limiting activity and taking the proper time off work to recover at home. Patients typically wait at least about one week before returning to work and regular daily activities. Dr. Roham will bandage your breasts immediately after surgery and instruct you to wear a surgical bra to ensure proper healing and reduce swelling. You should wear this surgical bra for up to six weeks. You can expect some degree of discomfort during your recovery, but you can manage this with a prescription pain medication from Dr. Roham or an over-the-counter pain medication per his recommendation. Dr. Roham will provide you with all the necessary post-op instructions at the time of your procedure. He will also be available to answer any questions you have along the way.

Results

You will see an immediate reduction in breast size after your surgery. The complete results will appear within six to twelve months after treatment. The scars will continue to fade within the first year of the breast reduction.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Dr. Roham specializes in breast procedures of various types, offering patients multiple options to achieve their breast goals besides a reduction mammaplasty. Many patients receiving a breast reduction will also include a breast lift in their procedure to further enhance their results. As heavy breasts stretch the skin and can lead to worsening sagging, a breast lift can effectively remove excess skin and raise the nipples to sculpt a more youthful, perkier appearance. If desired, these results can be further enhanced in shape or size with a breast augmentation procedure that uses either implants or fat transfer. Dr. Roham also specializes in male breast reductions, offering solutions for men suffering from gynecomastia.

Cost of Breast Reduction in Southern California

The total cost of your reduction mammaplasty procedure will depend on a few factors, including the scale of the procedure, any other treatments incorporated in your procedure, anesthesia costs, facility fees, and more. After you meet with Dr. Roham to discuss your goals, you will receive a comprehensive price estimate. Advance Laser and Cosmetic Surgery also offers various financing options for our treatments.
