If you are a man with excess breast tissue, you may understand how uncomfortable and psychologically troubling this may be. Male breast tissue can cause a significant impact on your life by chipping away at your confidence. Feeling insecure in intimate situations or unwilling to take your shirt off at the pool can take a toll on your quality of life— but your appearance doesn’t have to limit your activities.
Many men struggle with this problem. They developed breasts for a number of reasons including hormonal imbalances, medication usage, and obesity. Many times this excess tissue develops in adolescence and is never resolved. Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is used to remove excess breast tissue and fatty deposits from the chest to create a distinctly masculine appearance.
Some of the most popular reasons that men undergo gynecomastia treatment are:
One of the most important steps in gynecomastia treatment is a consultation with Dr. Roham, who can determine a few key things. The foremost is what factors may be causing your gynecomastia, which can affect whether your gynecomastia is caused by fat or breast tissue. This distinction determines what surgical technique will be used. During your consultation, it’s also important to discuss your aesthetic goals from this surgery.
Gynecomastia surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and you will go home the same day. There are two main approaches to male breast reduction surgery, depending upon the severity of the excess breast tissue. For many patients, liposuction alone can produce an outstanding result with fatty tissue that is causing enlarged breasts. For this technique, very tiny incisions are placed at the periphery of the chest to access the tissue. For some men, the breast tissue is very dense and cannot be completely addressed with liposuction. For such cases, a well-hidden incision is made around the edge of a portion of the nipple, and the breast tissue is directly excised. Afterward, liposuction is used to blend the excised area with the surrounding tissue and contour the chest. With these treatments, the overlying skin will generally tighten and does not need to be excised. However, in rare-but-severe cases where there is a great deal of excess and inelastic skin, some of the skin itself may need to be removed. During your consultation, Dr. Roham will ensure you know exactly what to expect during your customized procedure.
After male breast reduction surgery, you can normally go back to work within a few days, though some men may choose to take a full week off (this can be dependent on the physical nature of your job). For a month after surgery, Dr. Roham will ask that you wear a specialized compression garment under your clothes which will help to refine and improve your final result by helping the skin to adhere to the new contour. You will have some discomfort immediately after surgery, but this is easily controlled with medication prescribed by Dr. Roham. You will be provided with detailed instructions to guide you through your recovery, and Dr. Roham will be available to answer any questions you may have along the way.
If you have excessive fatty tissue on your chest then you’re an excellent candidate.
