A chin that does not project proportionately to a person’s nose – a recessed chin – is known as a “weak” chin.
Chin augmentation is a simple procedure that addresses a weak chin. It is commonly done as an outpatient procedure at our Orange County fully accredited plastic surgery center. Orange County plastic surgeon, Dr. Roham, is a specialist in Chin Augmentation and has seen hundreds of patients helping them to address their concerns about the shape of their chins and to choose the right chin implant for their face shape. The ideal candidate for a chin implant surgery is a patient with a receding chin but with teeth that align properly or a normal dental bite.
The chin implant insertion is made through an incision either inside the mouth or externally, under the chin. The implant sized exactly to fit the patient, is placed in a pocket between the chin bone and the chin muscles and periosteum. You can discuss the types and placement of incisions at your free consultation with Dr. Roham at his Santa Ana or San Clemente offices. The results are very predictable, the surgery produces highly effective outcomes, and it requires very little recovery time.
Chin implants are usually silicone-based (Silastic). The newer forms of chin implants are called Anatomic Chin Implants (or Extended Anatomic Chin Implants); they tend to have an extended appearance that happens to give a very natural look while creating balance and definition to all the facial features. There is also the Square Jaw Chin Implants that create a squared look to a person’s chin. Square Jaw Implants are often considered the ideal to enhance a male jawline to create a more authoritative and powerful look.
Chin augmentation can be done as a stand-alone procedure or as an adjunct to facial liposuction or facelift. While any implant material runs a risk of infection and consequently may need removal, it is very rare. Scarring is very minimal with a chin augmentation surgery because the incision is strategically hidden, or it is made under the chin. Many people are happy with the results of their chin implant and see the dramatic difference in the proportion of their facial features.
For a more dramatic enhancement, patients often discuss their options for a Neck Lift or Face Lift in addition to Chin Augmentation. Dr. Roham, one of the best plastic surgeons in Orange County with extensive experience and great reviews, successfully helps patients who are looking for the best service and outcomes from their facial cosmetic surgery.
