What is Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty is a general surgical term that includes many different procedures all aiming to improve and rejuvenate the eyes. Eye surgery or blepharoplasty, offered at ourĀ Orange County Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery office, is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed today. You use your eyes to communicate all the time, and you don’t want them to make you look tired or old. Eyelid surgery can be used to address droopy upper eyelids or puffy lower eyelids. By removing the excess tissue and correcting wrinkles, the eyes can be returned to their more youthful appearance making you look happier and well-rested and giving you the confidence you desire.

Your Customized Eyelid Surgery

The techniques used in your blepharoplasty procedure will be tailored to your individual concerns and needs. If excess drooping upper eyelids are your concern, incisions will be used in the upper eyelids for lifting and tightening. If puffy lower eyelids and under-eyes are a concern, liposuction techniques may be used in this area. During your consultation with Dr. Roham, he will assess your concerns and help create a plan to make you look your best.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Eyelid surgery is performed in our Orange County office under local anesthesia or I.V. sedation and generally takes between 1-2 hours. You will be able to go home after your procedure. Dr. Roham makes tiny incisions in the natural creases of your eyelids to leave virtually no visible scarring. Excess skin is removed and the fatty deposits are excised or repositioned. The overall effect is a tightening of the lids to produce a youthful appearance. The results of upper and lower eyelid surgery are dramatic! Our patients look many years younger.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

During the upper eyelid lift procedure, excess skin, muscle, and fatty tissue are removed from the upper eyelids. Dr. Roham uses a CO2 laser to make his incision in order to minimize bleeding and optimize recovery.Ā  The upper eyelid surgery incision is hidden in the natural creases above the eyelids. One fine stitch is used to close the incision which will be removed subsequently.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

The latest advances in Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery involve conservative removal of herniated fat and skin with CO2 Laser resurfacing of the wrinkly skin. Most importantly Dr. Roham believes in the replenishment of the lost volume around the eyes using your own body fat or dermal fillers (Restylane, Juvederm). This combined approach for lower eyelid surgery that is used by Dr. Roham tends to avoid the operated look and creates a very natural youthful shape to the eye.

Blepharoplasty FAQs

Am I a candidate for blepharoplasty?

If you are considering eyelid surgery, you will first consult with Dr. Roham, who will go into detail about what qualifies a person for this surgery. The following may be characteristics of good candidates for eyelid surgery:

Good health: Blepharoplasty candidates should enjoy good health, free from eye disease, such as glaucoma, as well as other medical conditions, like hypothyroidism and diabetes. Additionally, it is best that candidates are non-smokers. Smoking and tobacco use can have significant effects on health, but when it comes to surgery, this bad habit can drag out your recovery and slow down the healing process. If you do smoke, consider quitting before your procedure.

Realistic goals and expectations: Blepharoplasty is an excellent solution for enhancing your appearance and allowing you to feel more comfortable with the way you look. However, this procedure will not make you look like a totally different person or drastically change the structure of your face. Instead, you may find that you look like a younger, more refreshed version of your current self, which is a great improvement on its own. If you are looking for more dramatic results, speak with our experts about other procedures that may be performed in addition to or instead of blepharoplasty.

Significant eyelid sagging: Sagging eyelids can significantly change the way you look. In some cases, the extent of sagging is such that it causes the eyelids to droop into your field of vision; it can lead to issues with your seeing clearly. Eyelid surgery removes this excess sagging skin, allowing you to enjoy clear vision and a younger appearance once again.

What is the best age for blepharoplasty?

Although there are many factors that go into determining a patientā€™s candidacy for blepharoplasty, being a certain age is not necessarily one of them. Of course, as we get older, the effects of time become more apparent in our bodies, especially the face, where lines, wrinkles, volume loss, and sagging tend to set in. However, due to genetics and other factors, even younger patients can experience loose skin on the eyelids and may opt to have eyelid surgery to look their best. Blepharoplasty is recommended when the procedure can address the concerns of the patient safely and effectively. To determine if this procedure is right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Roham soon.

Can other procedures be combined with blepharoplasty?

Dr. Roham knows that patients often have an ideal result in their minds before visiting him. However, the wide range of available procedures can leave patients confused about which treatment or combination of treatments can give them the results they desire.

Blepharoplasty alone can certainly deliver excellent results, but Dr. Roham incorporates the specific needs and goals of the patient into a tailored treatment plan that can include additional procedures to provide even better results.

Will my results appear natural?

Some patients are hesitant to undergo this type of surgery due to fears that their results will not look natural. Fortunately, Dr. Roham has the technical expertise to create beautiful, natural-looking blepharoplasty results.

When can I resume exercise after surgery?

Blepharoplasty is associated with minimal recovery, and many individuals feel ready to resume their normal activities within one week of surgery. However, exercise and strenuous activity should be cleared by Dr. Roham first.
