A facelift, otherwise known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure to provide significant facial rejuvenation. The procedure can turn back the clock to help you achieve a much younger appearance, removing excess skin and tightening the facial tissue to smooth out wrinkles and folds. A facelift can also address signs of aging in the neck and under the chin, especially when combined with a neck lift procedure. In some cases, a patient may be a candidate for a mini facelift where the incisions are limited and less tissue is repositioned. This technique is appropriate for those with mind signs of aging that do not require the full facelift. This technique also leads to an easier recovery period.
Facelift surgery is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation for your comfort. Small incisions are placed around the ear and within the hairline where they can be easily concealed. The facial skin is lifted off of the underlying tissues, and these tissues are then repositioned to a higher, more youthful position. Sutures are then used to keep the tissue in place. The skin is then redraped to cover the newly contoured face and excess skin is removed. Special care is taken to avoid a pulled or windblown look when redraping the skin. The incisions are then closed with small sutures. The scars felt from a facelift heal to become very thin and virtually unnoticeable.
After a facelift, some patients may go home the same day, while others stay in the hospital for one night to recover under supervision. Following your procedure, Dr. Roham will wrap your face with a special bandage to minimize swelling and protect your incision sites. Patients should plan for at least a week off work to rest and recover at home. During this time, it is important to keep your head elevated to help minimize swelling and bruising. Very small drains may be placed at the time of surgery to remove excess fluids and will be removed on the day after surgery, while sutures are typically removed one week later. There is some mild discomfort after a facelift that is easily managed with the medication prescribed to you by Dr. Roham. As with all surgery at Advance Laser and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, you will be given detailed before and after surgery instructions, and Dr. Roham will be available to answer questions and guide you along the way.
