Phlebectomy

Phlebectomy Procedure in Santa Ana & San Clemente

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a procedure that is performed by the top Orange County vein removal specialist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Tim Roham under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Dr. Roham is able to remove large, bulging veins from the legs through small needle punctures using special vein hooks. Before performing Phlebectomy, Dr. Roham does a thorough venous duplex ultrasound study to map the diseased varicose vein anatomy and its associated connections to see if other veins need to be treated by other methods such as Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) or Sclerotherapy. Phlebectomy may be performed as a single procedure or may be combined with EVLT and Sclerotherapy to achieve the best result.

How is the procedure performed?

Once the patient is identified as a candidate for Phlebectomy, the diseased vein is marked in the standing position and then patient is laid on the procedure table and remarked again. Next, local tumescent anesthesia is injected using a small needle around the vein in order to create full anesthesia as well as shrink any blood vessels to prevent bleeding. Next, the skin over the vein is pierced every 2-3 centimeters with a small needle and the vein is hooked and removed through the needle puncture.

After the Procedure

There is no stitching necessary since there are no incisions made on the skin, and the needle punctures usually heal without any perceptible scars. Some bruising and swelling is common after the treatment and compression stockings are worn for one week to help decrease these symptoms. After Phlebectomy, Dr. Roham recommends all patients to return to normal daily activities and to walk at least 30 minutes continuous daily.
